Hotel Review: Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit (View King with Sofa Bed) - Affordable and Clean Room Near Phrom Phong BTS

Thailand will be dropping all testing requirements for fully-vaccinated travellers from 01 May 2022. While visitors are still required to apply for a Thailand Pass, they will no longer have to book a Test & Go package or enter via a Sandbox program from the aforementioned date. My visit to Bangkok was in late April 2022 and while I had the option of postponing my trip to take advantage of the new entry requirements, I decided to go ahead with my Test and Go package anyway since it will allow me to spend more time in Thailand.

Airport Transfer (Test and Go)
Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit

Bangkok has a wide selection of hotels for travellers to choose from - I am currently trying to keep my World of Hyatt Globalist status (60 nights in a calendar year) and the Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit had the cheapest Test and Go package (no longer relevant from 01 May 2022) within the chain. Priced from just THB 4,750 net, the room package includes accommodation, airport transfer, as well as all the necessary tests required for me to stay in Bangkok. It is worth noting that the upgrade benefit for Globalists is not valid at Hyatt Place properties around the world but the property actually provided me an upgrade from a Standard Room (with Sofa Bed) to a View Room (with Sofa Bed) that is located on a higher floor. Checking-in to the property was pretty fuss-free and no credit card information was required since this stay was prepaid (as part of the requirement for Thailand Pass approval prior to 01 May 2022). As I do have a few more nights booked at the same property, I asked whether I could stay in the same room but was informed that the designated rooms for the Test and Go package are located on a different floor and they have already blocked out another room (on a higher category) for me since I am a Globalist member. I was escorted directly to my room from the hotel lobby and was told that food delivery from third-party services is allowed - all I have to do is to put down my room number clearly and they will deliver it to my doorstep.

Bedroom

The View King (with Sofa Bed) rooms are located above the 20th floor and they feature a comfortable king-size bed, as well as a Cozy Corner with a sofa bed and a separate workspace. This is my first time staying in a Hyatt Place-branded property and it will trigger a Free Night Award (Category 1-4) for me under the Brand Explorer benefit. While the rooms are not huge, they are comfortable and really clean - the rooms remind me a little bit of a Holiday Inn Express but they are definitely better in terms of bedding, service, and cleanliness. The Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit is located just a short 5-minute walk from Phrom Phong BTS Station (where the famous EmQuartier shopping mall is) and honestly, I think it is a steal for what you are paying for (since non-branded properties in a similar location cost just as much).

King-size Bed

One thing that I really like about the rooms here is the abundance of universal power outlets - you will be surprised at how many luxury properties actually do not have this figured out. Located on both sides of the bed are universal power outlets (one side even has a USB charging port) which are perfect for keeping your personal devices charged while you sleep. The king-size bed is comfortable (on the firm side) and the rooms are actually quite quiet so it's possible to get a good night's sleep. I am quite a light sleeper so I usually struggle when the walls are too thin, or if there is a connecting door but the room was very quiet during my stay (which could also be due to a low occupancy).

Bedroom and Work Desk

All of the rooms here at the Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit feature a 43-inch flat-screen HDTV and it is mounted just above the work desk in my room. Unfortunately, it is not on a TV mount so you will not be able to adjust the viewing angle of this if you are on the bed, or on the sofa, but it does have a number of international channels for your viewing pleasure. The TV is equipped with a screen share function where you can mirror content from selected devices via Miracast or Intel WiDi but I did not bother to figure this out during my stay. The work desk may be rather narrow but it is definitely large enough for your laptop, your drinks, and even a bento box (if you are having food delivered) with plenty of space to spare.

Sofa Bed

Located directly in front of the bed is what Hyatt Place properties call a Cozy Corner - as mentioned earlier, the View King Room that I was upgraded to comes with a sofa bed (which is priced at a slight premium as compared to similar rooms without) and as far as I know, they are also slightly larger to accommodate for the bigger furniture. Personally, I love having an area where I can lounge about during the day since it actually helps to promote healthier sleep. This is also a great spot to have your meals if you are having food delivered to the room.

Noodles
Bamee Kon Sae Lee

Since I did not opt for an express PCR test on arrival, my test result is only expected to be out by tomorrow morning. Therefore, I was unable to leave the confines of my room on the first day - I decided to order noodles from a random restaurant on GrabFood and it turned out to be excellent. In fact, it was so satisfying that I actually had to google the restaurant to find out exactly where it is - Bamee Kon Sae Lee is located in Thonglor (approximately 1km away from the hotel) and apparently, it started as a street food cart stall in 1956. Similar to wanton noodles in Singapore, the noodles that I had from this restaurant were al dente and flavoured with lard as well as fragrant oil - the ingredients are also really well done and you can opt for something simple like char siew to more luxurious ingredients like crab meat at a reasonable price.

View from Room
Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit - View King with Sofa Bed

I am not great with directions but I can definitely see the famous MahaNakhon from a distance - the View Rooms at Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit are located the highest floors of the property and they come with impressive views of the Bangkok skyline. Blessed with great weather on the first night of my stay, I was also able to witness a pretty glorious sunset from the comfort of my own room. As mentioned earlier, the property is within walking distance to Phrom Phong BTS and there are great restaurants and cafes in the vicinity so you do not have to wander too far for food and drinks.

Tea Bags and Coffee

While the room does not come with a Nespresso coffee machine (and I certainly did not expect to find one), it does come with basic coffee- and tea-making facilities with generic teabags. I highly recommend that you bring your own if you are particular about the type of tea you drink but as mentioned before, the property is really great for budget-conscious travellers who want the standards of an international brand without paying the hefty price tags that typically come with luxury properties.

Complimentary Water
Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit - View King with Sofa Bed

Most travellers would caution against drinking tap water in Bangkok but honestly, I have not had any bad experiences with drinking it. With that being said, you might wish to stick to bottled water (provided free by the hotel) during your visit if you have a weak stomach. Two bottles of water are provided in the room but you can always ask for more when housekeeping comes in to make up your room (on a regular non Test and Go stay), or simply dial ‘0’ on the phone to request additional amenities.

Bathroom
Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit - View King with Sofa Bed

Consistent to what you would expect from a no-frills property, the bathroom of the View Room at the Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit comes with a shower area (no rainfall shower) at the end. Basic personal amenities like toothbrush and soap are provided but it is always a good idea to travel with your own (especially on longer trips).

Kenet MD Signature Collection
Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit - View King with Sofa Bed

Bath amenities at the Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit are provided by Kenet MD which is apparently developed exclusively for Hyatt Hotels - I am only familiar with the amenities at Hyatt Regency, Grand Hyatt, and Park Hyatt properties. This is the very first time that I am encountering this brand of amenities and they smell pretty generic for normal use. Body lotion is not provided here so if you have very dry skin, you might want to bring some of your own, or buy some from a nearby pharmacy.

Phad Kaprao (In-room Dining)
Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit - The Kitchen Menu

When I checked-in to the property, I was handed a piece of paper with various QR codes to order Breakfast (which is included in my Test and Go Package), Lunch, and Dinner. Initially, I had thought that Dinner and Lunch were also provided as part of the room package but a note below states that “orders placed today are for delivery tomorrow”. Strangely, I did receive my dinner order on the same day of check-in and I am not too sure whether it is part of the room inclusion (probably not) or will I be charged for this at check-out. In any case, the Phad Kaprao was delicious and I would gladly pay for it (especially since it is only THB 250++ for the seafood version).

Bedroom
Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit - View King with Sofa Bed

The Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit is not exactly a property that I would typically consider and truth to be told, I would have not probably considered it if not for its cheap Test and Go packages but my first-night experience has been great. For the price that I have paid, the room is decent and clean, and the service so far has been great - both my request for extra water and the fulfillment of food delivery has been prompt. I will be moving to a different room type soon for the rest of my stay and I will likely cover some of the facilities and breakfast on the next review of this property.
